As some of you know, I turned 30 two weeks ago. I used that particular birthday to do an evaluation of my life….and for the most part I am happy. I have an amazing son that I adore, a great husband, and run my own business. I have some nice horses at the moment and I LOVE my students. So my professional life is going well. Everything is going well at home. But there is one major part of my life that I am very unhappy with….my weight. I would need to lose around 50 pounds to be back to where I was before Jacob was born. I know my horses would appreciate if I could lose some weight, they would probably clock quite a bit better too. 50 pounds is a huge advantage to give someone (look at horse racing for example). I expect my horses to be in shape and it is not fair to them for me to not be in the best shape possible so I can help them out instead of hinder them.

My (hopefully) future sister in law just graduated with her Master’s degree and got a job at a local high school teaching physical education and health and is the athletic trainer. She is trying to lose weight also (but she is already much smaller than I am). She is doing a cleanse but with Chet and Jacob, I just don’t think I have the willpower for that. She also said we need to do HIIT to help tone, tighten, and get in shape as well as change our diet. HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. She sent me an awesome website. They have 30 days of workouts and you can see results with as little as 5 minutes each day. I started thinking and realize I sit around every morning and night for longer than 5 minutes waiting on the horses to finish eating so I plan on working out twice a day. If you would like to visit the website and join me in my weight loss adventure just click here. Wish me luck!

Constantly Learning

After a conversation the other day with a rider from a different discipline telling me that most trainers are not really qualified to be trainers, I started thinking…when is the last time I really did anything to further my education. I mean sure as a trainer and instructor I learn the most from trial and error and my day to day work. I recently stumbled across a free equine reproduction class so I decided to give it a shot. I NEVER have any intentions on becoming a breeder, but what the heck who knows….I may have a client that could benefit from me knowing more about the breeding side of the business. Another thing I am doing to continue my equine education is I am planning to go to a few clinics this summer!

My question to you is…what do you expect your trainers and instructors to do in order to continue their education? What does a trainer/instructor need to know to be qualified in your opinion?
