As a riding instructor, parents are such an important part of my job. Even though, most of my parents just bring their child to lessons, leave, and then come back to pick them up, parents are a very important part of my lesson program. As with everything, but especially in horses, parental support is everything. Parents play such an important role in their child’s life. The reason I am writing this post is because last week, I had a parent come to me and say, “My daughter wants to be successful, I want her to be successful, let me know what we need to do to make it happen.” I love it when parents are like this. When parents are willing to help their children it makes my life much easier. On the other hand I have a parent who is constantly telling her daughter she doesn’t trust the horse and the horse will never be what she needs. In a situation like that I feel like I am doing everything that I can for nothing. The parents are with their child way more than I am and if all the parent does is say negative things about how their child will not be successful, then the child will begin to believe it. Those are some of the saddest situations I have ever worked in. A child with a ton of talent and work ethic, a nice horse, and a negative parent. Parents-even if you don’t know if your child can do something, do not say it. Let them try! With hard work anything is possible. Do not sell your child short.
